The Australian Business Award for Business Innovation [BIA] recognises organisations that have successfully implemented initiatives that demonstrate leadership and commitment to business innovation.
Civeo Pty Ltd (‘Civeo’) is a workforce accommodations specialist operating in Australia that is dedicated to helping people maintain healthy, productive and connected lives while living and working away from home. Civeo operates close to 17,000 rooms in Queensland, New South Wales and some of the most remote parts of Western Australia and South Australia. Civeo’s goal is to provide the next best thing to home – comfortable, efficient and engaging living environments where people can rest, recharge and feel connected. Civeo believes that a well-rested, well-fed, healthy employee will be more productive at work.
In Civeo’s villages there is a focus on food. Breakfasts and dinners are served in large, industrial catering dining rooms. In 2020 Civeo observed many guests would automatically choose unhealthy, comfort-food meal items, high in saturated fats, salt and sugar. This trend is reflected in the mining and resources sector obesity rates that are higher than national standards. Civeo also believed the environment in its bright-orange and brown themed dining rooms made it challenging for guests to make conscious or subconscious healthy food choices. Civeo suspected this was having a negative impact on diner satisfaction and morale.
As part of Civeo’s dedication to provide a healthy environment for every guest, and with encouragement from clients to develop healthier choices, Civeo identified a unique opportunity to develop and implement an innovative, holistic approach to the experience in its dining rooms. The purpose was to introduce more healthy menu items; to make it easy for guests to choose and try new, healthier options; to educate guests about the impacts the food choices they made had on their health and wellbeing; and to provide a pleasant physical dining experience that encouraged them to make healthy choices. Civeo’s aim was to innovate and significantly transform the dining experience in its villages across Australia. Civeo’s desired outcome was to help its guests improve and take more responsibility for their health and wellbeing when in Civeo’s dining rooms, and at home.
The scope of Civeo’s innovative initiative featured multiple key areas that included developing healthier menus; defining target healthy eating habits to promote to guests; marketing and communications; and the interior design of its dining rooms. A high level of stakeholder collaboration was required to execute effectively and deliver a cohesive, innovative, dining room initiative that aligned with Civeo’s values and goals.
