Compass Housing

The Australian Business Award for Business Innovation recognises organisations that execute business initiatives which demonstrate innovative solutions for new and existing business needs.

Established in 1985, Compass is a not-for-profit organisation whose primarily aim is to alleviate the hardship of housing stress for low-to-moderate income earning households. They do this by providing secure and affordable housing, as well as delivering housing products to disadvantaged people.

People, Place, Performance (PPP) is the Compass Housing approach to tenancy and asset management. Compass delivers many services in addition to their housing function to support tenants in maintaining their tenancies, to create sustainable housing communities and to enable tenants access to wider services. The community projects endeavour to encourage tenants and the wider community to participate in social and educational events.

One of the business innovations Compass Housing are particularly proud of is their “In The House” program. The “In The House” program aims to increase and maintain positive morale and provide tenants with an opportunity for personal growth to enhance their lives. It also aims to address anti-social behaviour in tenant communities.

The design is complementary to Compass’s specialist model of customer service, providing an artistic therapeutic outlet, awareness of ‘self’ and attitudes, and a positive interactive environment. The individuals choose to either engage in a facilitator lead discussion around issues facing the surrounding community, or attend the Aerosol art workshop. “In The House” provides mentoring and positive influences to spark an initial interest, and follows up with the provision of options and access to training, volunteerism or support.

Compass Housing is being recognised for a Business Innovation award in the Australian Business Awards 2016.
